Overview: The Yeoncheon Paleolithic Festival, held at the Yeoncheon Jeongok-ri site, the earliest human habitat on the Korean Peninsula, is the world’s largest festival celebrating prehistoric culture. The discovery of the Acheulian handaxe in 1978 highlighted the advanced stone tool craftsmanship of the time and marked a significant turning point in the understanding of global prehistoric culture. The festival was initiated to promote and preserve the significance of the Jeongok-ri site by reenacting ancient cultures in a contemporary setting.
Festival Dates and Location: From May 3 to May 6, 2024, at Yangyeon-ro 1510, Jeongok-eup, Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do.
Admission Fee: 5,000 KRW, with an equivalent amount returned to attendees as a local voucher, effectively making admission free. Free entry is available for the disabled, national meritorious persons, children, and residents of Yeoncheon County.
Special Experiences: Visitors can participate in various programs that allow them to experience life in prehistoric times and gain insights into the wisdom of our ancestors. Attracting over 100,000 visitors annually, the festival has become a major event that reinterprets diverse ancient cultures through modern perspectives.
