Stepping Towards a Safer Society on the 10th Anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster

A decade ago, the Sewol ferry disaster struck the entire nation with profound shock and sorrow. Since that day, our society has been reminded of the importance of safety, along with the necessity for improved responses and prevention of disasters. Against this backdrop, the Democratic Trade Union of South Gyeongsang Province has declared April as the month to fight for workers' health rights, planning various activities and campaigns in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Sewol disaster. This marks a significant moment to emphasize the importance of societal efforts towards ensuring the safety of not just workers, but all citizens.

The commemorative event in Jinju will touch the hearts of many. Hosted by the Jinju Sewol Ferry Disaster Truth and Solidarity for People's Rights, this event aims to remember the pain of that day and to reaffirm our societal commitment to never forget. Through diverse performances by local artists and video letters from the victims' families, it promises to be a time of deep reflection. Moreover, the pre-event activities, including merchandise booths and food stalls, will provide a space for sharing these memories and coming together in solidarity.

In the aftermath of the Sewol disaster, our society has heightened its awareness of safety and implemented various measures to prepare for disasters. However, there is still much to be improved, and this requires the collective effort of the government, businesses, and individuals. The activities planned by the Democratic Trade Union are part of a social campaign to create safer workplaces and environments, emphasizing the need for all of us to take an interest in the health and safety of not only workers but every citizen.

This April, as we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sewol disaster, the various activities and campaigns hold significant meaning for all of us. Building a safer society is not an overnight task. If we all take an interest in this issue and start with small actions, society will undoubtedly move in a safer and healthier direction. Our small steps, taken in memory of the Sewol disaster, can lead to significant change, ensuring such pain is never repeated.

As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sewol disaster, let us all reflect once more on the value of safety and life, and work together towards the rights of workers' health and the safety of our society.
