The gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva from the Baekje era has completed its long journey of 100 years and has returned to us. Discovered in 1907 in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province, this treasure was taken to Japan, where it remained hidden from public view for over a century. However, after complex negotiations and efforts, it has finally been temporarily displayed at the Ho-Am Art Museum.
The special exhibition, "Like the Lotus Flower that is Not Tainted by Mud," deeply explores Buddhist art from Korea, China, and Japan, shedding light on the roles and aspirations of women in Buddhism. The exhibition showcases 92 masterpieces of Buddhist art, including national treasures and significant works from international collections, available for viewing until June 16.
The return of the gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva transcends the mere relocation of an artwork; it symbolizes the restoration of cultural assets and the reconfirmation of a nation's identity. This symbolic event has rekindled our recognition of Baekje's exceptional artistry and the spiritual value of Buddhism.
The exhibition emphasizes the messages of peace and empathy conveyed through Buddhist art. Visitors will discover the profound philosophy and beauty of Buddhism in each piece, including the gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Moreover, this exhibition demonstrates that Buddhist art is not only of aesthetic value but also deeply connected to universal human values.
This exhibition offers more than a visual experience; it provides an opportunity for visitors to feel and think with their hearts. Artworks like the gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva serve as a bridge between the past, present, and future, inspiring us and expanding our space for contemplation.
"Like the Lotus Flower that is Not Tainted by Mud" is open to all who wish to explore the true beauty and deep meanings within Buddhist art. This special opportunity allows us to reaffirm the value of our cultural heritage and experience deeper human connections and understanding. We invite you to commemorate the return of the Baekje gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva through this exhibition. Together, let's explore how our past enriches the present and inspires the future.
