Deoksugung Seonwonjeon Area Reborn as a Cultural Heritage

by BMPLUS 2024. 4. 19.

Choson Savings Bank Middle Historical House (Cultural Heritage Administration)

The Seonwonjeon area of Deoksugung, located in the historical heart of Seoul, is temporarily opened to the public. This area, known as the 'beautiful origin of jade', served as a sacred space where royal portraits of the Joseon dynasty were kept. It was demolished during the Japanese occupation, and several modern buildings were subsequently erected.

Key Areas and Features

  • Former Joseon Savings Bank Executive Residence: Transformed into a space for rest and viewing using old trees.
  • Seonwonjeon Excavation Site: Grass lawns and rest areas arranged around the excavated original stone structures.
  • Art Fence: Installed in cooperation with POSCO Group, featuring designs by artist Lee Myung-ho.

Events and Future Plans

This area will be open on a trial basis until August 31, with plans for permanent public access starting next year. Additionally, a pop-up exhibition themed around the Deoksugung Seonwonjeon's catalpa trees will be held at the former Joseon Savings Bank Executive Residence during July and August.

The opening of the Seonwonjeon area of Deoksugung is a meaningful event that reevaluates the historical value of Korea and returns cultural assets to the public. The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to continue providing more cultural opportunities for the public. Through these efforts, we hope that everyone can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Korea's history.
